Second, for things like sewer lines and drainage pipes, the trench must have a perfect, continuous slope. We have the tools, like laser levels, to make sure it’s done right.
The dirt we dig out is neatly piled right next to the trench. After the pipe or cable is laid, this same dirt is used to “backfill” or fill the trench back in.
Calling 811 (“Call Before You Dig”). This is a free service and it is the law. They will send someone out to mark the location of all public utilities so we can dig safely without hitting a gas, water, or electric line.
